Touches of Spring

Despite what the weather is doing right now, I decided to get my apartment ready for spring with a few simple and inexpensive touches. I made this spring wreath for about $15 with a Grapevine Wreath ($5) and two Hydrangea Stems ($5) from Michaels.

I bought these tulips ($5) from Trader Joe's and wrapped some extra ribbon I had around the vase. I love the combination of white, green and pink.

I cut apart a small flower stem from Michael's ($1.19) and plopped the stems in different colored mini vases.

How are you decorating for spring?

Cool Cat

J.Crew Sweater from Goodwill / J.Crew Skirt from Avalon / Illy Couture Necklace / Ray Ban Sunglasses / Halogen Boots

Working on the Goodwill Good Style Fashion Show inspires me every year. After shopping for the show, I always come away realizing how much I could be saving on clothing by shopping at Goodwill. You may not always get exactly what you want, but if you put in the time and have a little patience you can find some real gems in the racks of your local Goodwill. You have to be willing to see the potential in something.

This sweater I am wearing was found while shopping for the show one year. It's a size large from J.Crew. Now normally I would not fit into a size large, but I couldn't help but notice that it looked a little small so I tried it on. It fit great. Clearly someone had washed the sweater and shrunk it, which is why it was sitting at a Goodwill. Besides the fact that the sweater is in great condition and was very inexpensive, it feels like I have something very unique in my closet. It's something I wear all the time.

Do you shop at Goodwill? If so, what was your best find?

Shopping Trip 1: Goodwill Good Style Fashion Show

I made my first trip to shop for the Goodwill Good Style Fashion Show this past weekend. One of my favorite stores to shop at is the one located in Robinson here in Pittsburgh. It always seems to have fresh new arrivals and current styles. I think I made out pretty well. I only spent about $60 and was able to find a lot of good statement pieces to start with. The things I typically gravitate toward are bright colors, good patterns and classic shapes. I had some ideas about how I would pair the items that I bought so far, but as I look at them new combinations keep happening in my mind.

I hope you can make it to the show to see the final looks. The show takes place at Windows on the River in Cleveland on Thursday, May 7 at 6 p.m.  Tickets for the Goodwill Good Style Fashion Show can be purchased at Living Social for a discounted price of $30. In addition, you can enter to win 2 tickets here on my blog. There are three easy ways to enter to win:

Pastel Sweater: 3 Ways

We are experiencing a heat wave here in Pittsburgh. Temps are in the 40s to 50s this week, and that in itself made it feel like the right time to break out the spring wardrobe. For me, spring dressing this year means pastels. I can't get enough! Currently, I am on the hunt for a pair of pink pastel jeans or corduroys. Any recommendations?

Pastels surprisingly present a lot of outfit options. Since we are not out of the woods as far as cooler temps, I thought I'd start by styling this great cashmere sweater I got for Christmas this year. Here are just three of the many ways you can wear pastels this spring.

Charter Club cashmere sweater /  Gap pants / Payless shoes / Illy Couture necklace

1. Wear Pastels with White: I am pretty sure everyone has stopped abiding by the don't wear white before memorial day rule so it's safe to say that you don't have to worry about that. If you find the right fabric and the right shade of white, it can actually work really well with a pastel. These pants from Gap are more of an off white and they are a corduroy material so they pair very nicely with this cashmere sweater. Just make sure not to go with that really starch white that most summer jeans feature.

2. Wear Pastels with Brights: Pastels can be a great contrast to brights. Think of pastels as almost like a neutral in this scenario. They both bring out the best in the other color. I think these particular colors — lavender and blue — really go nicely together to begin with and create an interesting dynamic in these particular shades. I also tried to keep the rest of the outfit fairly toned down with these fabulous Ann Taylor pants that I got at Goodwill.

3. Wear Pastels with Deep Colors: I definitely think of this skirt as a fall/winter skirt. It's maroon color complements a lot of the deeper and richer colors of fall and winter nicely. Surprisingly, it pairs well with this pastel purple too. I think the key here was choosing two colors that fall into the same color family of purple. I layered this great thrifted Ralph Lauren blouse underneath to add an interesting pattern to the mix.

Goodwill Good Style Fashion Show 2015 Inspiration

I'm excited to share that I've been invited to do the Goodwill Good Style Fashion show again this year! So mark your calendars for Thursday, May 7. Every year I try to gather inspiration before I hit the stores. I never have a theme in mind going in. I typically just let the clothing I find inspire me, however, it helps to have some ideas to start with. I get my inspiration everywhere — from magazine spreads to other bloggers. To get a preview of what I have been thinking of see my pinterest boards including styles I loverunway looks, streetstyle and a new thing I am thinking of adding this year: do-it yourself looks.
