Love Cleveland: Goodwill Good Style Fashion Show

Close to three years ago, I decided that I needed a change of scenery. I had never lived outside of Cleveland and had never really lived on my own —not counting college. Also, I was looking for a new job that would be challenging and fulfilling and that would put me on a career path I would be happy with. I job searched in many different cities, but I inevitably chose Pittsburgh, where I found a job I can sincerely say I love. That job has lead me down the road of pursuing my MBA, and I have to say I could not be happier with everything so far.

As far as cities go, Pittsburgh rates pretty high on my list. I know it sounds like treason coming from a Clevelander, but Pittsburgh has many of the same features I love about Cleveland. That being said, there are still little things that I miss terribly about Cleveland.  The crowds for the feast at Little Italy, wandering the art museum for hours, perusing the west side market and looking at the lights on East 4th street — to name a few. That is why this year, for the Goodwill Good Style Fashion Show, I am letting the city I love inspire my runway show. Using my $125 gift card to Goodwill, I will be interpreting spring trends inspired by the many places I love in Cleveland.

If you are interested in attending the show, here is all of the info. It's going to be a great show this year! I hope to see you there!

The show takes place on Thursday, May 8 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Windows on the River. I am giving away 2 pairs of tickets to 1 reader.

What I love about Cleveland:

Three things--

1. Loyalty. You will never see loyalty to a city demonstrated by it's citizens in the face of constant mockery. That type of loyalty is something only a family can understand and relate to. Anybody can be loyal while merely flattering the best attributes; Clevelanders embrace the bad with the good.

2. Things are actually made in Cleveland. That means people here do physical work and stand on their feet all day. Creating something has more honor than manipulating the creation of someone else. Take that, world.

3. Christina Phillis is from Cleveland. Don't forget your roots, girl!

THE HISTORY...
China-Town:great restaurants interesting grocery stores where you can buy things you've never heard of, small boutiques where you can order a custom silk china doll dress for prom like I did 19 yrs ago...but how about the original street that's now abandoned store fronts-that was the China-Town my mother knew.
Kirtland Park: It sits quietly on South Marginal Rd, it's old amphitheater no longer used...but to sit next to the old statue and watch the cars passing or look past them at the beautiful lake is somehow sobering and peaceful.
Our Lady of Mt.Carmel(West) Festival:Italian sausage, lemon Ice and good ole Salt & Pepper Shakers with beautiful Lake Erie just a walk down the street. 88 yrs and still going strong...the locals still throw flowers in the street as parishioners carry Our Lady and process through the streets while the band plays traditional music.
Our ancestors that came her to work in the mills, the majesty of millionaire's row, the old underground railroad tunnels...I could go on and on, but it's all about HISTORY.

Three things I love about Cleveland:

1. I love how the city has become somewhat of a culinary hub. Not only do we play host to several of famed chef Michael Symon's restaurants and the renowned Great Lakes Brewing Company, but we also have the West Side Market, Melt, Dave's Cosmic Subs, and a variety of international delights such as Mallorca, Momocho, and a myriad of Italian places in Little Italy. There's really something for everyone in Cleveland! (Noodlecat is my all-time fave.)

2. Though I'm not really a sports person, I love the dedication and loyalty of our fans to our teams. It can be -10 degrees outside and blizzarding and you'll still see diehard fans in the Dawg Pound, totally entranced by the game! Plus, I'm a big fan of Stadium Mustard :)

3. I love that we're a waterfront city. People sometimes make jokes about Lake Erie, but it really is a beautiful view.

I could go on and on but these are my top favorites!
