Fall Trend: Smoking Slippers

Top Row: Gap Calf Hair Loafers / Target Mali Flat / Gap Tassel Loafers
Bottom Row: Nine West Panto / Asos London Rebel Snake Slipper / Steve Madden Croquet House Shoes

The smoking slipper, usually reserved for old rich men who have a butler and a couple horses, is having a bit of a moment. It started in spring and it's clear now that the aristocratic flat is moving right on into fall. The charmingly disarming prints and stately design have me obsessed. The more eccentric the better. Think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  I bet the pink ones taste like snozberries.

Navy Blue and White Striped Day Dress

Details: MNG by Mango for JCPenny dress / J.Crew necklace / Jones New York sandals via Avalon

Ah! This dress. One of my most treasured finds this summer. It is from the MNG by Mango for JC Penny line, which by the way was surprisingly good. The perfect day dress for baby showers and bridal showers. For a more casual wedding this dress has legs. Literally. The puckered shoulders and key hole are great details and who doesn't love stripes? I hope you all found a great day dress you fell in love with this summer. Do tell us about it!

Striped Cardigan and Polka Dot Blouse

Details: H&M blouse / TJ Maxx cardigan / Sears pants / Nines West shoes / Ray Ban wayfarers (Purchased with an Amazon gift card) / Michael Kors watch (gift)

I'm getting to that point when everything in my summer wardrobe is starting to feel blah and old. Introduce some of my lesser worn wardrobe items. This polka dot blouse is one such item. It's a little too big so I have a hard time styling it. I decided to deploy a fall trend — mixing prints — and at the same time hide the bagginess of this blouse with this new striped cardigan I picked up at the Maxx. I originally pictured this outfit with colorful skinny pants, but when I tried it with these navy blue trousers, I ended up liking the way the different blues looked together.

In other news, I have been studying for my GMAT and relearning math skills I haven't used in a good 6-7 years. Yay for being a writer!

Pittsburgh's Vintage Car Show

Like I said in my last post, we went to the Vintage Car Show in Pittsburgh on Saturday. I wasn't sure if I'd like it. I am not exactly prone to car talk.

The atmosphere and people were much different than what I would have expected. People set up wine and cheese picnics and watched the Grand Prix race. Some people even brought champagne. There were prizes for the best cars in certain categories.

While waiting in what would have been a terribly long line for beer, the vendor took pity on us and gave us free beers and souvenir glasses. We finished our beers as we perused the show. There were also delicious food stands with Italian sausage, funnel cake and lemonade.

The German and British cars were by far my favorite. I am surprised to say that I really liked it. Next year I want to pack my own wine and cheese picnic to watch the Grand Prix.

Pins and the Weekend

Sydney from the Daybook

Doesn't this rainy weather make you want to curl up on the couch for a marathon of Real Housewives (fill in your own favorite season/location)? Instead we are bravely heading to the Pirates game. That is if it isn't rained out. Then tomorrow we are going to a vintage car show and to the movies for the Dark Night Rises. What are your plans?

White Blazer and Navy Blue Dress

H&M blazer / J.Crew dress and necklace / Nine West Shoes / Ray Ban Wayfarers (purchased with Amazon gift card) Just threw together some wardrobe staples that I have been wearing all summer. To make this look a little different I belted the blazer and tucked my statement necklace in as well.

Green and Navy Blue Stripes

Ray Ban wayfarers (purchased with Amazon gift card) / TJ Maxx shirt / J.Crew skirt and Jones New York sandals via Avalon / Dooney and Bourke purse via Goodwill / Michael Kors watch (gift)

The more subdued colors of this outfit have me thinking of fall. The original inspiration came from several green and navy blue striped items in the J.Crew spring/summer lines. I found this top for $10 at TJ Maxx and purchased it with a gift card from my sister. The playfulness of the stripes is such a nice contrast to the serious pencil skirt — a pin stripe one at that. I like how the mismatched stripes add to the slightly off kilter look.

White Skirt Two Ways

A white skirt is a great investment for your summer wardrobe. It can easily cross over from dressy to casual depending how you accessorize and is comfortable in the hottest weather. These two looks are not very different, but the pieces that make up the whole are great supplements to the looks I already featured this week. All of these looks were achieved with 6 tops and 3 bottoms (This originally said 6 bottoms. That was a typo.) that could easily be mixed and matched to vary your vacation look while not over packing. These looks were based on the outfits I wore on my week-long vacation in Charleston, SC. So what do you think? How did I do? Do you have an even better process for packing?

Pink Shorts Two Ways

If you are like me, your beachwear is a sea of blues and whites. To break that up I packed these pink shorts to provide a little pop of color and maintain the preppy aesthetic I was going for. Here they are styled two ways! What do you think?

White Jeans Two Ways

I'm back from vacation. If you couldn't tell from the posts last week, I was in Charleston, SC. The past 9 days were spent putting my feet in the surf, reading really good books (go buy Gone Girl this second), dancing with a naked baby (my boyfriends' nephew) and having long conversations while eating amazing food. It's always a little hard to come back to reality after vacation, but I found myself homesick for my little apartment.

Anywho, let's get on to what I wore. Although I am a hot mess when it comes to packing (at least 4-5 items were not even worn), I did get a lot of use out of these white jeans. These are the two looks I came up with. One involving stripes (of course) and one white on white with a floral print scarf. I felt dressy yet laid-back in both outfits.

Fall Ankle Boots

Like any true romantic, fall makes me reach for dark, floral patterns and feminine details. To balance out that vibe, I occasionally drif...
