Vintage floral

The Limited blouse / thrifted skirt / Worthington tights / Old Navy boots / Ray Ban Wayfarers / H&M earrings

I picked up this vintage floral-print skirt from Avalon a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't wait to debut it on the blog. It has no tags with no distinguishable front or back -- a charming detail -- and I can't help but imagine it's something someone wore or purchased during a summer abroad. Do you do that? Make up stories about your thrifted purchases? It gives me an entirely different outlook on how a piece should be worn. Here I wore it with a business casual blouse and my wedge booties for a professional-but-not-too-serious work look. But I can't wait to wear it with sandals and a white top for summer. Oh, and I wore a bun. That has been a goal of mine for a little while. It's the little things.

Spring Layering: Dress and Button Down

J.Crew sundress / Ann Taylor blouse /  Emerson Fry belt / Franco Sarto boots / Michael Kors watch
Pairing a crisp button down with a spring dress is probably a well-known layering trick, but mixing up the combination can make your wardrobe look fresh as a daisy. To change it up, I tried out an old J.Crew sundress. I normally wouldn't say this, but I like how I'm-a-little-bit-country it looks with this white button down and boots. To mix it up further, I added my new Emerson Fry polka dot belt. Now that's just adorkable! Sometimes I like to dress like Zooey Deschanel when I go to work.

Pizza party

The other night I needed something easy and fast to cook for dinner. I had had enough of home made pizza in my youth, but decided to give it another try. I used a Boboli thin crust (much better than their thick crust), layered on the olive oil, garlic salt and pesto sauce and topped it off with spinach leaves, a mixture of shredded and fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. I cooked it on 400 for about 10 minutes. The crust was buttery and flaky and the pizza without a red sauce felt refreshing, as if I was eating something healthy. Add a bottle of wine and it's not a bad night!

Spring layering

Gap sweater / Target button down / J.Crew Outlet skirt / Hue tights / Ann Taylor vintage thrifted shoes / J.Crew necklace / Michael Kors watch / Ray Ban wayfarers
Spring wouldn't be spring without its feeble weather. The forecast for the week is calling for highs in the 50s and 60s. As sad as that makes me, I was happy to get another stab at some of my winter favorites. After all, I love my cable knit sweaters just as much as my flowy skirts and dresses. Pairing a bright skirt for spring with a chunky sweater is just what today called for. This is what I like to call transitional dressing, folks. It's the art of mixing clothes of different seasons for a refreshing take on your wardrobe and something to help pass the days until you are running barefoot in the grass through the sprinkler. Here's to one last run at sweater season. You were good while you lasted. Also, here's to Mad Men being back! Cheers to that!

Outfit Planning: Outdoor Events

I may be rushing things due to this unbelievable weather, but I can't wait for summer and all of its rituals. With tickets already secured to see Girl Talk at an outside venue this year, I am already starting to think of everything from what I will wear to the libation of choice. Summer Shandy in a can. As far as my outfit, I have been inspired by style meccas like bonaroo and lolapalooza. Bold prints, woven sandals and fringe accessories are the uniform at these summer music fests. Where else are jorts are socially acceptable?

Chambray on Denim

Target shirt and loafers / American Eagle jeans /  J.Crew necklace / Michael Kors watch
By now I think everyone has figured out that chambray goes inexplicably well with denim. Instead of looking like a Canadian tuxedo like you would think, the combination looks unfussy and tomboyish in a cute way. It was the perfect outfit for a chilly night (60 degrees) watching lacrosse. Optimal weather and circumstance for rolled jeans with loafers. I was beginning to think I wasn't even going to get the chance to wear rolled jeans the weather has been so nice. It would have been a tragedy of epic proportions.

Chartreuse and Navy

H&M blazer (gift) / Old Navy tank top / J.Crew skirt / Ring (gift) / Thrifted Vintage Ann Taylor shoes
I love pairing bright colors with a great navy blue. A really great navy blue can handle just about any color and not have its effect diminished by it. This chartreuse blouse and white blazer were just what I needed to embrace the 70 degree temps we have been enjoying here in the burgh. When in Rome...

Adding Brights to Your Wardrobe: The Cheap and Easy Way

Brights are the new trump card for spring and summer. You can still wear your Parisian-inspired striped tee, but it will not give you as much street cred as being a walking, talking cornucopia of color. The only problem is, if you are like me, your closet may feel a little one-sided in the color department. As much as I like to imagine myself as a person who loves color, looking into my closet has proven otherwise. Clearly, I have not been embracing the Fiestaware inside me.
If you are in the same boat, do not go into panic mode. We will get through this together. Me and the Jackson Five are here for you. You do not have to replace your entire wardrobe to get with the trends this season. Here are some tips to help you add brights to your wardrobe, the cheap and easy way:

Buying basics is a lot cheaper than buying an expensive silk blouse or sweater. I got this bright tank from Old Navy on clearance for $13. It can be tucked into a skirt and worn with a blazer for a sharp look for work or with a bright pair of jeans or shorts for a more casual look.

Remember the 80s? They were not that long ago. Thrift stores have tons of brights from the 80s. I bought the tank from Old Navy during a buy one get one free sale, and the United Colors of Benetton skirt is consignment from Avalon.

Start building outfits by considering the brights you already have. With color blocking being at its peak right now, it's much cheaper to accomplish this look if you already have one part of it. I already had this Loft skirt from last year. I purchased this pink blouse from Forever 21 for $15.

Fiestaware

Forever 21 blouse / Target skirt / tights (?) / Nine West shoes / Michael Kors watch
I wore this outfit to a party a couple of weekends ago. I'll be honest, I feel like I am channeling the colorful dinnerware that has made its way into the hearts and homes of many. Why be plain and boring when you can wear as many colors as possible? This was my first attempt this season at making a bright statement. I mean, really bright. I kept my tights and shoes simple and didn't over accessorize. I let the colors be the statement. I was a little gun shy at first, but I really love the way it turned out. Embrace the Fiestaware inside you! (fist pump)

Custom iPhone cases: 50% off on Groupon

Move over Lilly Pulitzer. Step aside Vineyard Vines. There is a new preppy pattern shop in town. Cleveland-based Textile Republic offers accessories, home goods and more in custom patterns. The best part is the website is fueled by independent artists, so every pattern is unique. The "Republic" or the shoppers on the site determine which patterns are selected and which artists make the most royalties from their pattern.
Starting tomorrow until March 14, you can enjoy 50% off Textile Republic's new iPhone 4 cases when you purchase the Groupon.

I am absolutely loving these belts. They would be great to pair with brights for spring and summer. Oh and they are reversible. So that's like two belts in one!

Happy Shopping!

I love arugula salad for something different. I wanted to find a dressing that would go with its unique taste, so I tried out this lemon-parmesan dressing recipe on Epicurious. I would definitely recommend it. It's a nice compliment to the arugula and it can be used for a variety of other uses. Take the whole salad and put it on a pizza crust or just use the dressing as a sauce with fish.

Orange and Pink

I was in Forever 21 the other day surrounded by all of its bright color offerings, and I felt like I might pass out, when I saw this killer combo of pink and orange. These two colors paired with a dash of gold are the perfect compliment to cerulean blue skies and azure ocean waves.

Leopard Print Confidence

I put this outfit on begrudgingly, thinking it would be another blah work outfit. No reason to document it on the blog. Then I added the leopard print belt and looked in the mirror, and I was astonished at how easily I could become a member of Josie and the Pussycats. Actually, I thought, this is one smokin outfit. You may disagree, but I can't deny the Joan-esque confidence I had all day. This sweater and skirt were two closet misfits on my list of neglected winter clothes. Here's hoping this weather perks up and I can start wearing spring clothes.

Neon Resistance

I'm slowly trying to incorporate the amazing bright spring styles I've been seeing into my wardrobe. It's been hard to hold back. Some days I just want to paint myself neon pink. I'm not even making sense anymore! I foresee myself wearing this $10 top from Old Navy a lot. It's casual but the dolman sleeves give it an extra something that elevates it above pajama level. If you are looking for bright clothes on the cheap, I would recommend heading over to Old Navy for reals.

Black as Night

I am trying to wear the winter clothes I have been neglecting in my closet this winter while I still have a chance. Strangely, it ended up being 60 degrees the day I wore this outfit, so I was too hot all day. I also witnessed a fight at Forever 21. Apparently some people start fights at malls with their extra 24 hours. Luckily I got out of there unscathed.

Although this may look like a skirt, I am wearing a dress again, this time layered under my black turtle neck. That is twice in one week. I hope you are getting it by now. I couldn't help the repetition, though. I love the way the two textures of black look together and the way the pearl statement necklace stands out against it. I felt very sleek and classy all day at work. There is nothing like an all black ensemble to make you feel effortless.

Fall Ankle Boots

Like any true romantic, fall makes me reach for dark, floral patterns and feminine details. To balance out that vibe, I occasionally drif...
