Thrifted: Bright Blazer

Thrifted jacket / Ralph Lauren top / H&M pants / Nine West shoes / The Limited necklace /Loft headband / Ray Ban wayfarers
Today's outfit felt very Audry Hepburn in any one of her films abroad. The short jacket, black pants and striped shirt have a 50s/60s European vibe to them, no? I found this jacket at the thrift store a while ago. The jacket is slightly big, but because it hits right above the hip, I think it still works paired with a slim silhouette like these skinny black pants. Although this jacket was probably either worn in the 80s or by a sassy retiree, the classic cut keeps it current and the bright pink color on trend right now.

Colored jeans: A nautical take

H&M jacket, pants and shirt / Candies shoes via Kohl's / Riley necklace / Michael Kors watch
Generally your bottom half does not get a lot of love when it comes to exciting colors. It's a life of boring blue jeans, black leggings and beige work pants. That is until you purchase a pair of colored jeans. I love them paired with polka dots, I love them paired with brights, I love them in a house and I love them with a mouse... Anyways, I was inspired by fellow Pittsburgh blogger, Stylish White Female, to get a little more nautical by pairing them with a striped t-shirt and a structured white blazer for a casual Friday look at work. How do you wear your colored jeans?

Listen, Read, Watch...

Listen to Santigold's new single Disparate Youth. Her latest album Master of My Make-Believe comes out May 1. You know her from singles such as Light's Out. Many compare her to M.I.A. I love the mix of electronic rock/pop.

Read "The Flight From Conversation", a New York Times Sunday Review opinion piece that states our need for connection via our electronic devices is replacing genuine and more meaningful face-to-face conversations. It's written by Sherry Turkle, psychologist and professor at M.I.T. and the author of "Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other."

Watch the live episode of 30 Rock tonight. I am excited to see what special guests they bring on for this year's romp at an SNL-esque approach to the show.

Budget Buy: Black Dress Boots

Sears jacket / Forever 21 top / skirt (gift) / Riley Chicago / Ray Ban Wayfarers / Michael Kors / Rampage boots
At my old job a retirement adviser would come in once a year and give us tips on how to save more money to stash away in our 401(k)s. Some of the best advice she gave was to buy off season. I decided to take that advice when Dilliard's was having a sale on all of their boots. I was in need of a pair of dressy black boots and these fit the bill for $20! I usually hate buying something toward the end of a season because I am too impatient, but our finicky spring weather has given me the opportunity to break them out early.

Summer Inspiration: J.McLaughlin Look Book

While browsing Unabashedly Prep the other day, I came across this photo shoot he did for J.McLaughlin's Summer 2012 Lookbook in Gasparilla Island in Southwest Florida. As I am currently bundled up due to a frigid and unwanted cold front moving through the area, I thought we all might need to daydream about breaking out our white denim, gingham and walking barefoot in the sand. Bridal Shower Attire

Calvin Klein dress / Francesca's necklace / Candies via Kohl's shoes / borrowed Weiss pin
Bridal showers are one of those events that constantly have me going and back and forth in my mind about what I want to wear. I am always at the brink of going to the mall and just buying a completely new outfit because I can't decide on anything in my closet. It's always a toss up between conservative and traditional and contemporary and young. I see people pull off both styles amazingly well, but there is a fine line between looking frumpy if you go the conservative route and looking too sexy if you go with contemporary. As one of the bridesmaids, I chose to go with this Betty Draper-esque day dress. I knew I would be standing in front of grandmas and aunts of the bride who may not appreciate a more contemporary look. So I am really curious, what do you wear to bridal showers? Does it change if you are a bridesmaid?

Giveaway: VIP Fashion Week Cleveland & GlamJam Tickets

I'm happy to announce that I am giving away tickets to Fashion Week Cleveland's GlamJam Festival on May 5, as well as a pair of VIP tickets to the Black Tie Gala and Runway Shows on May 12. Events this year will be held at the historic Halle Department Store building in the theater district downtown.

The GlamJam party, dubbed as a couture carnival, promises to provide an interesting time with wearable art presentations, DJ Kynce of Z107.9 Cleveland and gourmet food trucks. I can vouch for the food trucks. You don't want to miss out on the Fired Up Taco Truck.

From my experience at the show last year, I would recommend getting to the Runway Show early to grab a cocktail and see all that Fashion Week Cleveland has to offer. This year peruse the Halle Department Store Fountain Room Exhibits, check out the new Fiat 500 and browse the Pop-up Boutique Mall, all while listening to the musical styling of Nights.

These events are the perfect excuse to get out, get dressed up and experience Cleveland in a new and different way. I went last year and had the opportunity to see so many up-and-coming local designers including BBG Couture by Britini Brocker, whose romantic designs I just fell in love with. It's also a way to meet people who share your passion and interest in fashion. VIP tickets are normally $100, so this really is a great giveaway!

If you live in or around Cleveland, see how you can enter to win below!

Earn One Entry on a Once a Day Basis by:

Thrifting Makes Me Happy - April 15, 2012

I just had to share the goods I got on my last thrifting jaunt around town this past Sunday. Stopped into Avalon and got this skirt and sandals for $15, using my $8 credit from selling clothes. I purchased the pocket square at Finder's Keepers on Cochran Road
Then I stopped at a yard sale and got this wine rack, that I had been wanting, for $2 and both vases below for $1. I love thrifting so much that I posted this terrible wonderful picture of myself to share the look of triumph in my eyes.

Stay Classy Pittsburgh

Sears jacket / Forever 21 top and jeans / J.Crew necklace / Macy's necklace and earrings/ Nine West shoes / Michael Kors watch (gift)
Pittsburgh is known for its fanatic sports fans. The dedication does not end once football season is over, though. It goes on into the winter and spring months for its second favorite team, the Penguins. I am not even sure if second is a fair term, here, because the level of obsession is no different than during football season. It's just...hard to describe. I guess you have to be here. Friday night I did what every self-respecting Pittsburgher did. I found the nearest hospitality provider, donned my penguins-themed outfit (notice the black top and white pearls) and settled in for a night of hockey.

Listen, Read, Watch...

Listen to Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Gotye, who will be making his debut on Saturday Night Live this weekend with Josh Brolin hosting. "Somebody That I Used to Know" has been on the radio a lot here in Pittsburgh and will likely be performed during his set.

Read Ashley Judd responding to media insults about her face and weight gain. She makes an interesting point that women were involved in propagating this story. Women attacking other women about weight gain and wrinkles? It just doesn't seem right.

Watch HBO's new show Girls on Sunday. It's apparently a more frank and gritty version of Sex and the City.

Bright Stripes and Chambray

Gap sweater/H&M pants and purse/Target shirt/Thrifted Vintage Ann Taylor shoes/Ray Bans (purchased with a gift card)/J.Crew necklace
I've kind of been in a pants phase lately (aka the past two days) due to the sometimes warm sometimes cold weather we have been having. I'll be honest, I am soo over tights at this point. The cold weather has been making me reach for the most comfortable, practical outfits possible. I had been wanting to make this chambray and wide horizontal stripe thing happen for a while, and I realized it might be my last chance. Little did I know when I bought this Gap sweater for $15 two Christmases ago that thick horizontal stripes in unexpected color combinations would be such a thing. Not so good at the fashion forecasting, am I?

Work Outfit: Rock the Polka Dot

 J.Crew polo/Old Navy sweater/United Colors of Benetton leggings/Franco Sarto boots/Banana Republic necklace/H&M purse
This outfit started with a compromise. Last night I said, I'll get up really early and pick out an outfit tomorrow. Instead I negotiated for another half  hour of sleep. As I was rushing to get ready this morning, I had no idea what to wear. The only thing that kept popping into my mind was that I was still wearing my purple nail polish from Easter. I knew this polka dot sweater would be playful enough to compliment my Easter-egg nails. Because the polka dots are so exaggerated and playful, for work it needed more serious pieces like these riding boots and black skirt and this overly dressy necklace to tone it down. The popped polo was added for sheer preppieness, and I like how it completed the look.

Bundled Up Spring Outfit and an Award

It's raining and cold here. So photographing my outfit was not an option, today. Instead I thought I'd share an outfit from last year around this time. When the temps fluctuate all you really need are a warm sweater and a good pair of slacks.

Thank you Sarah of Simply Sarah for awarding me the Tell Me About Yourself Award!

Here are the rules:
    1. Thank and link back to the person who awarded you.
    2. Write 7 random things about yourself.
    3. Spread the love to 15 more bloggers.

Here are my seven random things:

    1. I used to be a competitive figure skater. Now I am a coach and teach kids and adults of all ages. I landed all of my doubles except for my double axel. I started learning it, but that was around the same time I started college so studies came first. At a skating clinic in Ann Arbor, I met Tara Lipinski and Kurt Browning.
    2. I was the Arts and Life Editor for my college newspaper, the Carroll News. I met Halley Barry and Giovanni Ribisi when their 2007 movie Perfect Stranger premiered in Cleveland. Barry, a Cleveland native, was trying to show some love to her hometown and all of the local college papers had the chance to interview them. She IS really that gorgeous.
    3. In college I was also involved in greek life. I am a member of the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma. Our colors are dark and light blue. The fleur-di-lis and the key are our symbols. I always keep an eye out for anything featuring either symbol. Jewelry with either is not hard to find.
    4. In 2008, I did Race for the Cure. My aunt is a breast cancer survivor, so I was interested in getting involved and raising money.
    5.  I have always wanted to learn to play the piano. People always comment that my weird long fingers would have come in handy if I had been a piano player. Also, I feel like it would be a good skill to break out at any social gathering. I should also mention that I love to do karaoke.
    6. This may sound cliche, but I want to travel the world. I think a great job would be as a journalist abroad. I have been out of the United States on a Caribbean cruise and to Canada. I have never been to Europe, and I think my first stop is a tie between Paris and Rome.
    7. Recently, I bought a sewing machine, and I really want to teach myself how to use it and make my own clothes.

Loud and Proud

H&M top /  thrifted skirt  / Nine West shoes / Gap cardigan / Ray Ban Wayfarers /  Macy's bangle / earrings from Mom
Bold prints can really set you apart from the crowd. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I am wearing a skirt with a large graphic print on it when people stare at me a second longer than usual when passing them in the hall at work. I absolutely love a bold print, and even more than that I love mixing patterns. The painted-on effect of the beach scene on this skirt is certainly eye-catching. To prevent it from looking too chaotic, I made sure that my top matched at least one color in my skirt. I love how well the nautical stripes play against the beach scene.

Work Outfit: Collegiate

Ann Taylor blouse / Rag Refinery skirt / Franco Sarto boots / United Colors of Benetton leggings / Ray Ban wayfarers / drug store headband / J.Crew necklace / Michael Kors watch

I feel very collegiate in this vintage plaid skirt and wine colored boots. I have worn this skirt several different ways (Like here, here and here), but I was waiting for the perfect chilly spring day to pair it with a crisp white blouse. The headband and Ray Bans help to carry out my preppy spring look.

Yesterday, I saw some pretty clever April Fool's Day jokes that I had to share:
1. I was very surprised to look up the weather on Google and find a message that read "Don't like the weather? Now you can change it..." It was even equipped with drop down menus to alter the temperature.
2. When the boy and I were driving home this weekend, we heard a story on NPR about an elite preschool in New York City that as part of their enrollment process was asking parents to get DNA tests of their unborn child to determine intelligence level and ability to succeed.
3. Philadelphia installed pilot lanes for people texting and checking email while walking down the street and is apparently keeping them up all week.

Did you hear of any good pranks?
