Consignment Store Recap

I decided to stop into a certain favorite consignment shop this weekend. Just to take a peak. No big deal. And there just happened to be all of these clothes that fit me perfectly and that would get a long with all of my other clothes and that wouldn't make too much of a mess...I promise...

So I walked out of there with a Gap dress from last season and a practically brand new Banana Republic blazer all for $30. The dress looked a little wrinkled at first, but after a wash and a little attention from my steamer it looked brand new. The blazer is a much needed addition to my wardrobe. I was lacking in the neutral jacket department and this one fits like a glove. Link up in the comments with your consignment shop finds.

Sheer Ambition

The days are starting to get longer, the temperature outside is getting ever so warmer and the sun is showing its face a little more frequently. Spring and warmer weather are right around the corner, and it felt like the right time to incorporate a flowy, sheer skirt into  my winter work uniform. I love the way the purple and bright floral pattern stand out against some of my darker winter staples. It can sometimes be hard to add personal style in a more corporate environment, but I think this vintage dress from my mom adds just the right amount.

The Oscars

Although some say Billy Crystal was too past his prime to host and Angelina Jolie's right leg stole the show, there were still some great moments. I especially love this photo of Meryl Streep and Colin Firth backstage. Octavia Spencer's emotional response to winning her first Oscar gave me goosebumps. Maybe the Academy was trying to get everyone to appreciate the magic of movies again by giving silent film, The Artist, Best Picture. Who knows?

Anyways, as much as I love watching the red carpet, the after parties are really what I am after. I would love to be a fly on the wall for this conversation between Glenn Close and Michelle Williams.

Sofia Coppola and Tom Ford at Vanity Fair party.

Olivia Wilde walks into the Vanity Fair party.

And just for good measure, these were my favorite dresses of the night. I absolutely love the exaggerated bow on Emma Stone's dress; the rosette shaped gathering on Stacy Keibler's Marchesa gown; and the dramatic draping of Angelina Jolie's Atelier Versace dress.

Best Picture Inspired Style: Midnight In Paris

Midnight in Paris is about a family who travels to Paris. The conflict arises when the engaged couple (Rachel McAdams and Owen Wilson) start to realize they want different things out of this trip, and possibly, out of life. Rachel McAdams takes more of a tourists approach to Paris while Owen Wilson is trying to capture the essence of the 1920s Paris experienced by Hemingway, Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein. I too had a hard time deciding between current Paris and the writer's paradise that was Paris in the 20s. So I went with an outfit that assumes the essence of a timeless Paris. I couldn't go with out the signature American trying to be French look: my striped shirt.

Best Picture Inspired Style: Hugo

Hugo is about a young, orphan boy secretly living in the walls of a train station. He sets all of the clocks in the station and has a talent for fixing things, including the automaton, which is the only thing left of his father. He crosses paths with a cranky toy shop owner and his god-daughter, Isabelle. She is constantly reading, has a penchant for big words and is somewhat mischievous. I was immediately drawn to her. The setting is 1930s Paris in the winter. I found myself really admiring her cavalier mixture of stripes and plaids, as well as her combination of warm chunky sweaters, wool skirts and coats. Ingredients for the perfect winter look.

Best Picture-Inspired Style: The Artist

The Artist is about silent movie star, George Valentin, who starts to loose his relevancy in a new era of talking pictures. Peppy Miller was the perfect character to embody for this post because she is the fan who turns into a star. As a fan imitating a star, this choice couldn't feel more appropriate. The setting is 1920s Hollywood. The dresses have low waist lines and are still rather modest in shape and hemlines. The hair is short and curly. I wore this longer layered blouse to imitate the longer waistlines and loose-fit dresses. I decided to go with a faux-bob by twisting my ponytail and tucking and pinning it under in the back.

The Oscars: Best Picture-Inspired Style

The Academy Awards will be returning to the Hollywood Kodak Theater for its 84th year. I always love watching to find out who will wear what, was the host funny, and which film will take home Best Picture. To honor the awards, I will be wearing three outfits this week inspired by Best Picture nominees. After aggregating what were determined to be the best films of the year, I was able to identify one common theme among three of them. Stay tuned to see what that is! And if you haven't already, get your butt to the movie theater!

Colorblocking: Red and Purple

I have seen this particular colorblock pair (red and purple) parading around blogs and clothing stores and I love it! They are great complimentary colors and make an outfit interesting. I feel like I am wearing something much more daring than just a pencil skirt and a sweater to work. Getting up and getting dressed has "literally" never been more fun. (Said like Rob Lowe in Parks and Rec.) The only problem was in the tights and footwear. Because of the nautical stripe shirt underneath, I wanted to keep the shoes a warm color. I also didn't want the color of the tights to stand out more than the outfit so I went with black. The easiest part was in the accessories. The outfit itself creates such a look that accessories are not even necessary, but because I wanted to keep things warm I went with gold.

Valentine's Day; Wash, Rinse, Repeat

I have worn a number of Valentine's Day themed outfits whether they were meant to look that way or not and any one of them would do for a special date night with my Valentine. I am sure there is something already appropriate in your closets, no?

Valentine's Day Date Idea

I have an idea for Valentine's Day. Put your hair in a messy bun, red headband, and wear a flirty blouse like this girl. Buy one of these. Document the date. The flowers, the restaurant, the buildings, the street. Take one together if you can find a willing stranger. Keep photos as a Valentine's day memento to look at all year.

New Girl

Just in case you didn't know, there is this a New Girl in town! And by that I mean the new show on Tuesday nights called New Girl, starring the adorable Zooey Deschanel. She plays Jess, a happy-go-lucky, girly-girl who often ends up in awkward but charmingly funny situations with her three male roommates. The show at times can get a little too goofy, but there are plenty of laugh out loud moments to make up for it. True to Zooey Deschanel style, there is a lot of sartorial inspiration. See the striped sweater above. Adorbs! Also check out my Zooey pinterest board. This girl crush has officially gone to the next level. Let me know if you are a fan!
