Winter Makeup Routine

Lately I have been drawn to a much more simple look when I do my makeup. I was inspired when I saw Miranda Kerr wearing just a bright lip and smokey bronze eyes. Although the simple looks probably works best when the rest of your "outfit" is stealing the show, I thought I'd give this a try for my everyday office look.

Here is how I achieved this look:

1. I have been skipping the heavy foundation and instead I put on Aveeno Positively Radiant tinted moisturizer everyday for a more natural but even skin tone.Plus it helps to stop my skin from drying out in this winter weather.

2. Next I put on a very light blush. I like Dandelion Benefit blush.

3. One time I had my makeup done at an Aveda salon. They used bronze eye shadow on me and I have been meaning to try that look on my own for years. I love Mac eyeshadow in bronze with Maybelline mascara in blackest black. I forgot to picture it but I always use Too Faced primer before I put on any shadow.

4. For noticeable lips I wear Maybelline lip gloss in gleaming grenadine.

5. If I am going out and I want to add more to the look, I wear Mac eyeliner in graphblack on both my top and lower lids.

Wear to Work: Playful Classic

These bright stripes are exactly where they belong: mashed up between two neutrals. I love the balance of green, navy and brown in this outfit. It feels like I am wearing something very classic, yet updated. Not to mention it fulfills my love for Annie Hall tomboy dressing.

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas...

A centerpiece I used for my Christmas party over the weekend. A bouquet from Trader Joe's in a jar with ribbon and pomegranates.
A new poster to go along with Mr. Douglas Fir.

A fresh wreath filling some wall space.

Reading for the Weekend

I have a bit of hectic weekend ahead of me. I'm hosting a Christmas Party and cookie exchange and my apartment needs a little tidying and I need to make 54 buckeyes (I know they are not cookies). Hopefully, I will be able to find a little bit of R&R somewhere in there and read the comedy issue of Vanity Fair edited by Judd Apatow. I especially look forward to reading the Out to Lunch Column with Jimmy Fallon and the Proust Questionnaire with Louis C.K. Happy Weekend!

In My Own Skin

It's always hard trying to tow the line between professional and unique with a work look. I think this outfit does the trick. Normally, a nice pair of loafers would be appropriate here, but I put on my riding boots to mix it up and tossed on this mustard scarf to add color to an otherwise neutral palate. I didn't notice this at first, but the mustard really compliments the blue and white striped ruffle peaking out. This outfit makes me feel very "me" without looking out of place for work. What do you wear to make your mark at work?

Holidays Rule

Holidays Rule features artists like the Shins, Rufus Wainwright and Paul McCartney singing classic Christmas Songs. For those of you who live in Pittsburgh, it's all of the artists you would hear on 91.3. It's a nice break from the same versions you hear over and over again on the radio. I can't wait to play this for my Christmas Party. The only thing that could be better would be a Mumford and Sons Christmas CD. Maybe next year?

Skinny Cords

I was super excited to share with you my most recent Marshalls find, these Blank NYC skinny cords. They were in the clearance section for $39.99 marked down from $80. The wale of the cord is very thin so they almost feel like velvet. (Don't even get me started. "I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable.") On top of that I scored this great Tulle jacket with an Avalon credit. The tan and wine together create such a great fall look and my sailor stripe t-shirt adds that extra bit of pattern to break everything up. I wore this on a Friday when I had a lot of meetings and wanted to look professional but still casual.

Did You Shop or Not?

So did you do it? I shopped on Friday and picked out a brand new luggage set for a reasonable price as well as a few Christmas gifts. I didn't really get into the whole clothes shopping craze that I usually do this year. Partially because I can't keep my mind straight for long enough to even know what I want and partially because I am trying to stay away from impulsive shopping. The whole shop on this specified day but wait to find out what the deals are whether its online or in store does not feel like the best way to shop. I want to take my time and know that I am buying something I really love or really need as opposed to buying something because it is on sale. My mind cant differentiate the two when I am in a time-pressure situation. How about you? Find any good deals?

Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Banana

(Photos: Top Left / Bottom Left / Middle / Right

I started my Christmas shopping over the weekend. Black Friday shopping is always a seasonal right of passage for me and my mom and sisters, but by the time we get to the mall, everything is picked over and the sales are pretty average. A couple of the stores I went into already had sales going on and I was able to get some pretty decent deals. One such deal was the purchase of these orange cropped pants on final sale for $14.88 at the Loft. At first, I was skeptical about buying orange pants, but then I realized there would never be another better opportunity for me to buy orange pants. I quickly did a search on Pinterest when I got home to make sure I wasn't crazy and found some great outfit inspiration seen above. Orange pants in question below.

Thanksgiving Decor for Less Than $6

Next week is Thanksgiving and I realize that most people are pretty stressed out. Out of town guests, feast preparation and Black Friday shopping culminate into a very hectic time. Luckily, I have not reached that stage in my life where I actually have to host Thanksgiving. Everyone in my family should be very pleased about that as I am just starting to learn how to feed myself. However, I did make an effort to get festive where I could around my apartment. I bought this basket for $1.50 at Goodwill and purchased the seasonal potpourri for around $4. This is definitely not centerpiece material. Like I said, I am not there yet. But I do think it would look nice in another room or entranceway if  you want the Thanksgiving theme to carry on throughout your home.

Military Jacket Over Work Outfit

Just as summer was winding down I scored this military jacket for $15 at Avalon. With military being such a big trend for fall I snatched it up. For a long time I toyed with the idea of wearing it over a work outfit. After seeing Skyfall this weekend, the latest installment of Danial Craig as James Bond, I pulled the trigger. I think I was inspired by Naomi Harris as Eve Moneypenny. Her MI6 office attire felt sophisticated but modern. For the purposes of my workday, this jacket toughens up the ruffles and satin of this blouse, and accentuates the jewel tone.

Sophisticated in Polka Dots

Maybe it's because I was born in the 80s and I can still remember wearing polka dot sweaters with neon pink leggings, but I had a nagging need to tone down this sweater lest I repeat history. I also really wanted to wear it to work without looking unprofessional. A simple but fall-appropriate color palate and sharp tailored separates was my game plan here. I like how polished yet not-to-serious this look is.

Chesterfield in Need of Home

For reasons unknown to me, I found myself browsing the furniture section of Anthropologie and found the likes of this Chesterfield in need of a home.

Burgundy Jeans

Details: Gap sweater / Target jeans / Wanted Royalty boots via Piperlime / TJ Maxx necklace / Nine West heels

I bought these burgundy jeans as soon as August got here. As far as colorful jeans go for fall, burgundy definitely felt like the right addition to my wardrobe, which is filled with a lot of navy, white, black and gray. There were so many potential outfits already built in waiting to happen. With all of those choices, I still wanted to challenge myself a little more with an interesting color combination. I knew these similar hues would really compliment each other for a more complex palate. The sweater helps to tie in the turquoise while making it pop at the same time. Just for fun, I wanted to show you this outfit dressed down with boots and dressed up slightly with leopard print heels. My only peeve with these jeans is how they get really loose after only a couple of hours of wear. Oh well! It's the dryer for them!

Weekend Update

It sure was a rainy weekend, but that didn't stop us from getting into the fall mood. Carving pumpkins, butternut squash soup at Yorita, a plate made at Color Me Mine, and a little touch of Halloween flair around the apartment. How was your weekend loves?

Apple Pancakes

It's funny how at certain times of year there are foods you always crave. I can vividly conjure up the taste of my Grandma's mashed potatoes right now. The cooler weather always has me craving those comfort foods. This past weekend, I was thinking of one of the recipes my Dad always made when we were younger, apple pancakes. I think he may have used whole slices of apples, but I chopped them. However you make them, with a little cinnamon and syrup, they are amazing!
Slice and dice as many apples as you want depending on the serving size and how much apple to pancake ratio you like.
Mix the apples in cinnamon and oil and heat in a frying pan for one minute. Then stir the apples into your pancake mix.
Cook the pancakes according to the instructions on the box or whatever homemade recipe you are using. Then enjoy with family and friends!

Wild for Fox Jewelry

The last wearable animal motif I owned was probably a cat sweater. I know, I wouldn't be friends with me either. But after seeing this Burberry fox ring, my love of whimsical animals was turned on once more, and I have been obsessed with finding a more achievable option. Luckily, any one of these regal pieces would pair well with rich fall colors and fabrics. Looks like I'm in the lion's den no more...

Mod Girl

Details: Gap dress and shoes / Ray Ban Wayfarers

Do you guys remember the movie Factory Girl? The story of Edie Sedgewick, socialite and muse to Andy Warhol. Ever since that movie came out, all I have wanted to do was run around in shift dresses and be fabulous. The typical life of a socialite. However, I think I would feel bad doing nothing, so I would have to become a super witty 60s spy or something. But anyways, when I saw this dress at Gap in the sale section, my heart skipped a beat. For $25 I could, in fact, be fabulous! Not to mention it's bright and graphic, trends I have been really into lately. I can see myself pairing this with black tights on cool fall days.

If looking like pop art, isn't enough, I smell like it too. While reading an interview with Sarah Heyward, writer for HBO’s GIRLS on Loop de Luxe, I was tipped off about A Beautiful Life Brands, PoP Eau de Parfum. The scent goes on strong but mellows out for a nice everyday perfume. I was able to get the already affordable perfume at a discount, so I highly recommend you check out Loop de Luxe.

Reader Submission: TJ Maxx Max Studio Green Skirt

Do you remember this skirt? I wore it a few style posts ago. My lovely college suite mate, Rosanna, texted me saying how much she loved it and was able to find it at her local TJ Maxx. A total win! I just had to share the way she styled it. I love the classic white button down, chunky necklace and bright shoes she paired it with. Isn't she looking good in her fall work outfit? Another fashion success story!

Here is my summer to fall take on it:
