A toast to the weekend

I am starting my weekend early and hopping on a 6 a.m. flight to Dallas tomorrow for a wedding. I'll be back Monday. Enjoy your weekend!

Inspirations

The Globe had a very interesting Q&A with Scott Schuman, a street-style blogger, better known as the Sartorialist. He brings to the table a fresh perspective on fashion. The idea behind the blog is that people are inspired by what other people are wearing day-to-day, not by fashion labels. I couldn't agree more. I have my fair share of fashion icons and I love to look at the pretty dresses and outfits every season, but it is hard to be inspired by an expensive outfit that I will never be able to buy. I am much more inspired by everyday people who achieve a flawless look, but then you find out they are wearing a hand-me-down or something they found at a thrift store. That is much more interesting.

Being romanced

Look at this romantic dress from Tuleh's Fall line. I love the deep blue color and the ruching, as pointed out in Style.com's trend report. I actually think it is way too early to be thinking about fall, but I couldn't help but sneak a peak since Fall is my favorite season. I especially love dressing for fall. I love nothing more than sweaters, boots, and earthy colors...long walks on the beach, poetry...yadda yadda yadda.

Trendsetter

My favorite new beach cover up is my boyfriend's button down dress shirt. It's kind of like a kaftan, but more casual and a tad bit sexier. It helped me cover up the inevitable sun burn I had on my arms. No need to steel his since so many retailers are selling a boyfriend variety shirt. I am sure that Target or Marshalls have shirts that will work just the same. I'm bringing trends to the streets and the beach....right.

Etsy find: Nautical

I love when Etsy puts out a list of themed items. Today, on the homepage they have a nautical theme. I was quite smitten by this necklace, purse, and charm bracelet.

Sears Tower

Chicago is one of my favorite cities. Every time I go there I get caught up in its history and its memorable landmarks and sites. I actually start to feel like I could get used to calling myself a Chicagoan, if the beautiful city would have me.

Therefore, when I found out they were changing the name of the Sears Tower to the Willis Tower I was not happy. Banks and companies move into a city and think it's good publicity to put their name on everything. It's not. People hate it. I will never stop calling Cleveland's baseball field Jacob's Field and our ice arena The Gund even though insurance companies have changed the names.

Target Gossip Girl inspired fashion

Have you heard that Target is coming out with a Gossip Girl line, fashioned by Anna Sui? It will be in stores September 13 through October 17. Check out the slideshow of outfits on New York Magazine's site. Here are some of the looks. The only one I really like so far is Blair's polka dot dress. What's your favorite look?

Packing for a beach vacation

I am going on vacation next week, and I hate packing. I am the chronic overpacker. I can never resist the urge to bring something I know I wont use. Here are some things I know I need and some tips on where you can buy similar items. Where do you buy your summer basics? Or that perfect summer dress? These are the bare essentials, and I know I don't need to pack much else besides variations of these things.

This is the summer tote I have been bringing along with me for the past couple of summers. I have no idea where it is from because it was a birthday gift, but I love it.

I love any kind of coral nail polish. This is from essie's spring line. It's called One of a Kind and is $8.00.

Although I did not purchase any shoes from Steve Madden for the summer, I was impressed with their selection and pricing. This gold sandal is on sale for 39.95.

I honestly don't know where you are supposed to buy cover ups. I always look at Marshalls or TJ Maxx, but by the time I do, which is usually in June, they look picked over or really cheap. This year I was determined to find one that resembled the terry cloth Juicy Couture variety. At $35 it was a little pricey, but I had tried every other possible discount source and could not find one I liked. I am happy with this one from Victoria's Secret. The material is durable, and it is the right length and color.

For bathing suits I sometimes like Victoria's Secret, but you have to be careful about ordering things that may look like they have cheap detailing. Something basic like this is a safe bet. The top is on clearance for $6.99 and the bottoms are $5.99.

Basics like this one are easy to stock up on at Forever 21's prices($6.80). They also have the longer length, which means after the beach they can paired with skinny jeans or leggings. And they have a more interesting cut like this racerback scoopneck.

For dinner at a nice restaurant or just for wandering around a city during a muggy summer night, I like J.Crew for their lightweight, colorful summer dresses.

Monday Style Inspiration

Vogue has named Emma Watson a beauty icon on its site. I can't help but love her giant frizzy hair from this Harry Potter scene because it reminds me of my own, and I love this look of hers especially.

Dream

I had a dream that I was floating along the coast of the long island sound and it was sweeping me back and forth like a wave pool. It was the best dream until my alarm woke me up.

Acoustic: Poker Face

Did you know that Lady Gaga was a talented musician and singer? I had no idea. Her music sounds so processed normally that I couldn't tell. And the tabloids that portray her as weird and crazy were not helping my opinion of her. Thanks to my friend Bryce, I have a different perspective after he told me to look up this version of Poker Face. Which version of the song do you like best?

Cleveland in the News

Lately Cleveland has been getting some good press. The revival of East 4th was covered in the New York Times. And if you didn't believe my account of the Summer Solstice Party and Opening of the East Wing, then read this bloggers take on it, who claims it lifted Clevelander's spirits.

DIY: embellished tights

Cocorosa is a fabulous blog. Go there to find out how to make your own embellished tights. They are sexy but innocent and remind of tights I wore as a child. I might as well break out the skorts and jellies with these. I would have loved to have had these during my figure skating days, although the judges would have probably thought they were too flashy.

Girl crush: Marion Cotillard

Marion Cotillard is a very worthy girl crush. Starting in well-known movies such as Big Fish (2003) and A Good Year (2006) and then moving on to La Vie en rose (2007), which won her an academy award (the first oscar given for a french-language role), she now stars in the blockbuster Public Enemies. In these pictures of her walking the red carpet you can see her trying to emulate a little 1930s style. I admire her acting and style. She is definitely someone to keep an eye on as her acting career progresses.

It's my birthday! Woo! I came so close to being born on the 4th of July, but the 5th is nice too. I still get fireworks around my birthday every year. Hope you have a great 4th of July!
